It’s not Amazon

In early May of this year Bob Ferguson, the Attorney General of Washington State, filed what is believed to be the first consumer protection lawsuit against a Kickstarter campaign from investors wanting their money back.

Many in the US believe the current raft of new tech products across sites like Indiegogo and Kickstarter (take Smarty Ring as an example) are either chasing a commercially unviable space or will simply never deliver on their promises and Bob Ferguson’s lawsuit is just the start of a new era where the ‘Crowd gets Angry’.

Kickstarter was initially frequented by a very savvy crowd who had expertise to help them judge whether or not tech projects were ever capable of being delivered. Now the audience of such sites has broadened to include average consumers and some of those consumers treat Crowdfunding like an Amazon.com for products that don’t yet exist.

Stronger screening and better communication of what a project’s level of complexity is along with more responsibility by the platforms is the only way to avoid a free for all in legal claims that could kill Crowdfunding.

ArchOver Launch Party

Wednesday saw the official launch party of ArchOver in the Waterloo room at the Institute of Directors. It was a great event attended by over 100 people on a fine summers evening. There were drinks and canapés a plenty followed by a short speech from our Chairman Brian Basham.

We thank everyone that made the effort to attend and hope everyone had a pleasant evening. We certainly did!

Mamma Mia! Crowdfunding takes centre stage

[avatar]

Having recently discussed the positive impact of Crowdfunding on science, sport and healthcare the latest thing to catch the eye is the soaring popularity of Crowdfunding in theatre. With an estimated 14million people flocking to London’s West End every year to view a plethora of theatrical performances, it comes as no surprise to see people so keen to invest.

Ambitious productions have led to sky high ticket prices and consequentially half full audiences causing the curtain to fall on popular and successful West End shows. Production costs can be as high as £8million for Musicals so traditional investment has lent its hand to wealthy groups or angel investors, so it only seems natural for Crowdfunding to enter stage right.

The Crowdfunding Centre have released figures from Q1 2014 that show Crowdfunding campaigns in the UK have raised over £250,000 for theatre projects, with the number of individual backers rising 700% in 3 months. Whilst the total amount raised is clearly a long way short of total production costs the crowd are clearly excited about being part of a show.

Currently online donations are being rewarded on a philanthropic basis with investors receiving signed programs or press night tickets however one producer from the West End has stated the potential for it to move from a donation based model of Crowdfunding to an Equity based model, with investors receiving similar financial terms as their offline counterparts – if the show makes a profit.

The show must go on!

Breaking Bad

Dena Stern, a young woman in the prime of her life is suddenly diagnosed with cancer. She barely earns enough money to pay her bills and now she desperately needs funds to help pay for her treatment.

In the hit TV show Breaking Bad the quintessential 21st century anti-hero, Walter White, turns to a life of crime and drugs to raise funds. Dena turns to Crowdfunding!

Crowdfunding now offers patients, scientists, and doctors a chance to raise funds to pay for treatments and research and Dena Stern is living proof having recently beat cancer with the help of Standbuy.

Standbuy is a leading, donation based Crowdfunding platform to emerge and their goal is to “provide a focused, supportive and easy to use platform so that others might find a little more room in their day for healing instead of worrying about financial stress.”

It is certainly early days for Crowdfunding and cancer but with positive stories like Dena Stern Crowdfunding can have a hugely positive impact in healthcare and medical treatment.
